New post in a very, very, very long time.

Lately I have been posting my artwork on Facebook and Instagram. Its easier and I can do it on my phone. Bonus! Feel free to add me or start following. I'll include the links and stuff like that.

Here is a couple paintings I've done. On Instagram theres tons of daily drawings, and concept sketches. Plus the tattoos I've been busy with this last couple of months.

Maybe I'll run around here to Blogger once in awhile, but I'll be using those "mainstream" formats for now. Also I'm lazy. Nuff said :)

Painting of Rolf Markusson Svensk glasmästare ( Swedish glazier )

46cm X 55cm burnt sienna on canvas board
Painting based off the drawing from a previous post here. Its really an oil pick-out. Felt more like a drawing when I was painting it. Didn't rely on tiles but instead using paper towels to lighten areas or a q-tip dipped in mineral spirits for the highlights. Really fun process. One of my favorites. A little scratching in the hair with a palette knife. It will be on display at the Rättvik Kulturehus, Sweden December-January

DalaKonst 2010

DalaKonst is held at Dalarnas Museum from December 14 till January 14. Its an art museum in Falun, Sweden. Where the works of Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson are displayed. Every year they have an exhibition for the artists of Dalarna. The Middle part of Sweden. Over 1000 works are submitted by more than 100 artists. This year they choose around 50 artists and over 100 pieces to display. They choose 2 of mine!
Its kind of a big deal.

I submitted 4 paintings and 1 drawing. They choose to exhibt my self portrait and the drawing. I also made the frames. My mother-n-law took the pictures for me.

I drew this guy at a violin class, and later worked more on the values and quality.
My portrait was in the back by the door. It wasn't that bad of a spot. When people came in or left, they got a good look at it.

My drawing it on the right.

Self Portrait #1

This is what I look like made out of oilAfter I'm done with a painting I scrape all the leftover colors that I have mixed into little puddles of warm and cool greys. I also wipe my brushes off on a blank canvas. When I started this painting I had a couple of weeks worth of these spare colors, and a very interesting and dark canvas. In a way this portrait is an amalgamate of my paintings. All the experiance from the other paintings went into this portrait by using those colors. A kinda alternative way to symbolize oneself by means of color, instead of objects.

Trees

The best landscape painting I did on my weekly outdoor painting trip with Court Jones at the San Diego Mission

(Court helped a little.)

I'm not good at painting the trees. So I got me a book and started practicing.3x4 oil on massonite

Study of an Elizabeth Tolley Painting
8x12 oil on massonite

Last year I did a little painting in Balboa park of a tree in watercolor. I didn't now how to mix colors back then. After doing a few studies in oil and practicing more with watercolor I painted over it. Adding more cools in the darks and bumping up the warms in the light. Before I started it had a 3 values.

Sarah_Isabella

The most beautiful artwork I ever created, and the painting isn't that bad either.

My wife will take pictures of our daughter each day and load them on our computer. Its a surprise to see what they were up to during the day, and what new images I have to draw or paint from.

Critiques welcome!

I just watched Jeremy Lipking's video on painting the portrait. So I positioned myself to have the same angle he had of his model.
I tried to follow the same steps, and color etc, but it ain't no Lipking.

Lipking study

I recently went to the Lipking exhibit and got a big dose of inspiration. It was amazing to see his paintings upclose and examine his brush strokes and color. Court has taken a workshop with him before so it was great to get his insight on his paintings and his technique.

There was a big article about it in "American Art Collector." So when I got home after the show I painted a study from the cover while the inspiration was still fresh. Because it was getting late, I only spent 2 1/2 hours on the painting. I could have spent another 2 1/2 hours on this piece and brought it to finish. The goal was mainly to match his colors, and practice his technique, and get as much of it done before I fell asleep. I learned a huge amount from the study, even though it isn't finished.

Small studies

The model didn't show up for class, so Vanessa Lemen sat instead. I used a really small panel this time so I could get her whole portrait done in a short amount of time, 2 1/2 hours. The model usually sits for 2 classes, but she was only going to model for one class. I know that it is kinda a weird composition, but when I started, I wanted the main focus to be that shadow behind her head, but I got involved in contrasting the cools and warms in her face and etc.

5x7 2 1/2 hours

Not alot of time for this one. The background was blue so to save time I used a canvas panel that had a dark stain of prussian blue. I tried to not paint into the areas that I wanted to have cool shadows, or darks.

So not to bad for a quick little study. Maybe another hour would be enough time to fix some of the mistakes, but a great learning experience anyways.

Still Life

Court set up a still life for our weekly painting day. I have no interest in painting still lifes, and think they are boring as dirt. I did however give it a shot anyways.

11X14 3hours

I really found the challenge to be fun and a great learning experience. Every time I paint in oils I learn something new. Something that I'm sure I can use in painting other subjects, like figures, or landscapes. I feel like that kid that wouldn't eat green eggs and ham, and after he had a bite, he really liked it, and realized they aren't that bad.

critiques are welcome

En Plein Air with Court Jones

One day I lugged all my paint equipment to the beach. It was my first landscape in oil, and I learned alot, from the experience, but mostly what not to do. I actually was married on the beach in the lower right in front of the big rock 5 years ago.

La Jolla

So Court Jones and I have been painting outdoors on Wednesdays. The first time out was an adventure, and my painting really didn't come out the way I envisioned it. It will never be viewed by human eyes, again.

Court is a great instructor, and really knows his stuff. I feel like I'm improving, but there is still alot to learn.
